HU SNG Basics: Regular speed, Turbo or Ultraturbo ?
Hey Guys!
It seems like HU SNGs have become very popular for a lot of bluffers, and I am very happy about that. This alone is motivation enough for me to share some of my experiences with you guys.
Although I did not run and play too well during the last month, I do have some games under my belt and I think that I am quite experienced in this specific form of NLHE. I think that the decision for a certain format and the (blind-)structure it implies is a vital one. This post is not much about in game things, I doesn't offer instructions on how to play a particular hand in a particular spot and things like that. It is more about some very fundamental things that you should think trough before you even decide to try out HU SNGs. This post is about providing you an insight of the pros and cons of the different formats and structure's of NLHE HU SNGs.
To make a long story short: The format chosen is first of all a matter of taste and personal preferences. But imho there are some hard indicators to find the right format for yourself. Let's just start off with the pros and cons of each format:
Regular Speed HUSNGs:
The blinds increase pretty slow (e.g.: Cake/Cereus/Stars: 10 mins, FT: 6 mins)
PROs:
- These games involve lots of play. You will see a ton of hands before the blind level reach the critical area.
- This allows you to select your starting hands more carefully in the early stages
- means: You might get away from good made hands if your gut tells you so and you are not forced to go broke with them
- Much more time to "grind" an opponent down
- Much more time to pick up reads, betting patterns and stuff like that, which is important in HU-play
- The realistic ROI in these games is much higher than in the other introduced formats
CONTRAs:
- These games take much longer than other formats
- This will or at least might abate you $/hr-rate
- You wont get much value for good made hands early
- You wont find as many opponents that stack off very light, compared to the other formats
- means: very few action-junkies, less easy money
Ulraturbo/Superturbo HU SNGs:
The blinds increase very, very fast and/or your starting stack is smaller than usual [Cake/ Cereus: 2 mins; Cereus offers UTs with a 500 chips starting stack as well; FT: 3 mins with a starting stack of 300(!!!) ]
BTW: I can't see much skill based play in the UTs with a shortened starting-stack. So my proposal is: stay away from these games.
PROs:
- These games are over very, very fast
- means: If you are a solid winner, your &/hr- rate can be very, very sweet
- If you're an ICM-mean-machine you'll get your chips in +EV oftentimes
- Lots of action junkies and tilting players to be found
- Lots of "WTF?! How could he make that play?!"- situations with yourself on the winning side
- Lots of ridiculous plays
- Good chances to get payed of with good made hands early
CONTRAs:
- No time to pick up reads
- No time to grind your opponent down
- Not much space for plays, not much fold equity
- Pretty much no way to get away from a good made hand, even if you think you are beat. The math just doesn't allow you to fold in most cases.
- Lots of AI-races: Boosts variance
- You could become one of the tilting monkeys very fast and could burn lots of money before you even recognize that you are on tilt
The turbo games are somewhere in between. I guess you can figure out what the PRO/CONTRA-list would look like on your own
OK, after pointing out the PROs & CONs of each format, let's see wich player-types/characteristics fit to these formats best:
(RS= Regular Speed; T=Turbo; UT= Ultraturbo/ Superturbo)
From Absolutely important to not necessary :
patience necessary RS T UT
postflop skills necessary RS/T T/UT UT
ICM-skills necessary UT T RS RS
High ROI wanted RS RS/T T/UT UT
High $/hr wanted UT T RS
do you tilt fast? ...then play.. RS RS/T T UT
BTW: This is just a humble try to systematize necessary characteristics and different formats of HU SNGs. I don't think that this list is complete and I'd appreciate your input.
I hope that helped some guys who are still wondering which format they should play. Maybe this can be an impulse for those that are not sure that they are playing the fitting format. And maybe it's interesting for some to follow my weird thoughts. Or maybe it was just interesting to read
